What is the BEAC CFA franc and which countries use it?

The Central African CFA franc (code XAF, issued by the BEAC — Banque des États de l'Afrique centrale) is the official currency of six countries: Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), Chad, the Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea. It should not be confused with the West African CFA franc (XOF), used in eight other countries.

What is the fixed EUR/XAF rate?

The BEAC CFA franc is pegged to the euro at a fixed and irrevocable rate of 1 EUR = 655.957 XAF since 1 January 1999 (replacing the French franc at 1 FRF = 100 XAF). This rate does not fluctuate on currency markets.

If the rate is fixed, why is Paris Change's displayed rate different?

The interbank rate of 655.957 XAF per 1 EUR is the reference rate between central banks. Our retail sell rate is slightly lower to cover operating costs, but we charge no additional commission. The rate shown is the all-in rate.

Can euros be used directly in XAF zone countries?

Accepted Answer

No, the euro is not legal tender in XAF zone countries. Only BEAC CFA francs are accepted. At some large hotels or supermarkets in Libreville or Yaoundé, euro payments may be tolerated, but at very unfavourable rates.

Should I bring cash or can I use my card in Central Africa?

Accepted Answer

Cash remains king in most XAF zone countries, especially outside major cities. International bank cards work at ATMs in capital cities (Visa and Mastercard), but outages and withdrawal fees are frequent. Arriving with a stock of XAF cash is strongly recommended.

Are there restrictions on importing CFA francs into Central Africa?

Regulations vary by country. As a general rule, importing cash up to the equivalent of 1,000,000 XAF (approximately €1,524) does not require a declaration. Above that, a customs declaration may be required. Check with the embassy of your destination country before departure.
