The Tunisian dinar (ISO 4217 code: TND, symbol DT) is the official currency of the Republic of Tunisia, managed by the Central Bank of Tunisia. The dinar is subdivided into 1,000 millimes. An important point for travellers: the TND is a currency with restricted convertibility (closed currency). Tunisian exchange regulations officially prohibit its export outside Tunisian territory beyond a very low ceiling (30 TND per person). It is therefore essential to keep exchange receipts obtained when buying dinars, in order to be able to reconvert unused banknotes at a Tunisian bank before departure.
Tunisia welcomes several hundred thousand French tourists each year, drawn by its beaches (Hammamet, Djerba, Monastir), archaeological sites (Carthage, El Djem, Sbeitla), oases (Douz, Tozeur) and refined cuisine. Despite the presence of ATMs in tourist towns, dinar cash remains essential in souks, medinas, for local transport and small daily purchases.
