The Central African CFA franc (ISO 4217 code: XAF) is issued by the Banque des États de l'Afrique centrale (BEAC), headquartered in Yaoundé. Since 1 January 1999, it has been pegged to the euro at the fixed and irrevocable rate of 1 EUR = 655.957 XAF — a legacy of the former peg to the French franc (100 XAF = 1 FRF). France guarantees the unlimited convertibility of the XAF through the French Treasury, giving this currency exceptional stability compared to other African currencies.

The six BEAC zone countries represent a diverse economic area: Cameroon is the main economy (oil, cocoa, coffee), Gabon is one of the richest countries in sub-Saharan Africa thanks to oil and manganese, and Equatorial Guinea has one of the highest GDPs per capita in Africa. The Franco-Cameroonian and Franco-Gabonese community in Paris is one of the largest in Europe, generating regular demand for XAF at our bureau.
