The Indian rupee (ISO 4217 code: INR, symbol ₹) is the official currency of the Republic of India, managed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Unlike fully convertible currencies such as the euro or the dollar, the rupee is described as a partially closed currency (or 'soft closed currency'): the RBI strictly controls its international flows to protect the Indian economy from capital volatility. In practice, this means that stocks of rupees available in European exchange bureaux are limited and can vary by period.

India is a major tourist destination for French travellers: Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala, the Himalayas, Varanasi and the cities of Delhi and Mumbai attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. For travellers, the most common strategy is to bring a small amount of rupees for initial expenses, then supplement the exchange at licensed bureaux in Indian airports, which generally offer excellent rates.
