The Peruvian sol (ISO 4217 code: PEN, symbol S/) is the official currency of the Republic of Peru since 1991, managed by the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú (BCRP). The sol succeeded the inti, which itself replaced the gold sol. Despite being an emerging economy exposed to commodities (copper, gold, silver), the PEN has maintained relative stability against the dollar over the past two decades thanks to the BCRP's prudent policy.

Peru is one of the great South American tourist destinations for French travellers: Machu Picchu, Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Lake Titicaca, the Nazca Lines and the Amazon rainforest around Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado attract thousands of visitors every year. Outside Lima, Peru remains a predominantly cash economy, making soles essential for almost all everyday transactions.
